Position: School Librarian

Department: Library and Academic Resource Centre

Reports To: Principal / Academic Coordinator

Position Overview: 

The School Librarian plays a key role in supporting the CBSE curriculum by promoting reading habits, providing access to a wide range of informational resources, and helping students and teachers use information ethically and effectively. The Librarian fosters a love of reading, research skills, and independent learning among students from Primary to Senior Secondary levels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the organization, development, and maintenance of the school library’s physical and digital collections according to CBSE guidelines.
  • Guide students in selecting appropriate reading materials for academic purposes and personal growth.
  • Support teachers by providing resources aligned with NCERT textbooks, CBSE syllabi, and other academic projects.
  • Conduct library periods as per the school timetable, encouraging reading and research skills.
  • Teach students about information literacy, referencing, digital safety, and responsible internet use.
  • Organize activities such as reading challenges, storytelling sessions, author talks, book fairs, and library weeks.
  • Maintain accurate records of book issues/returns using a library management system.
  • Update and maintain a catalog of books, periodicals, reference materials, e-resources, and online educational databases.
  • Create a vibrant, welcoming, and disciplined library environment that fosters curiosity and independent learning.
  • Collaborate with teaching staff to integrate library resources into lesson planning and project work.
  • Promote Hindi and regional language literature alongside English resources, as per CBSE emphasis on multilingualism.
  • Support and train students in referencing (APA/MLA formats) for projects like Class XI–XII Investigatory Projects and ASL activities.
  • Ensure compliance with CBSE guidelines related to library facilities and learning resources.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Library Science (B.Lib.Sc./M.Lib.Sc.) from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a library.
  • Proficiency in library software and digital library systems.
  • Familiarity with CBSE curriculum structure and academic project requirements.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with students across all grade levels (Primary to Senior Secondary).
  • Knowledge of children’s, young adult, and academic literature in English, Hindi, and regional languages.
  • Commitment to promoting reading as a lifelong habit.

Work Environment:

  • Operates primarily from the school library.
  • Engages closely with students, teachers, and academic departments.
  • May involve extended hours during school events, annual exhibitions, book fairs, and Board practicals.
